Okay, let’s be real. EVERYONE has a junk drawer, no matter how organized you are. It’s kind of like a normal part of life. But for the most part, junk drawers can be a real frustration. For one, having a junk drawer gives you an excuse to be disorganized and keep clutter.
You never want to give yourself an excuse to keep clutter around! If you let that happen, clutter in the junk drawer will build up until the drawer is busting at the seams.
Kind of like how mine was…
Don’t judge! 🙂 Your junk drawer probably looks very similar! Mine looked like this off an on for a very long time. I would declutter it, but within a few months, it would pile back up again. But then one day I found something that was a total game changer for me! A junk drawer organizer! Who knew they made such things? Okay well maybe you knew but I didn’t and I was ecstatic when I bought it!
Mine is from Walmart and is made by Mainstays. I couldn’t find it on their website, so I have linked a few other options below!
Junk Drawer Organization Tips
When I say that having a junk drawer organizer has been a total game changer for me, what I really mean is that it completely changed my mindset and how I feel about our junk drawer.
The junk drawer used to be a place where we just threw “junk” that we didn’t have a place for or didn’t want to deal with at the time. But now, since using this organizer, I am much more conscious of what goes in our junk drawer. This junk drawer organizer has dividers and even has suggestions on what to put in each divider. Some suggestions I followed but some sections I found other uses for.
I only put something in my junk drawer if it fits in the designated spaces and it makes sense for it to be there. If I want to throw something in my junk drawer, but it really need’s a home somewhere else, then I find a home for it right then. I no longer allow myself to use the junk drawer for junk, but instead, a way to organize what needs to actually be in the junk drawer!

Steps for You To Take:
If you decide to use a junk drawer organizer, purchase one before you start this step. However, you can continue without the junk drawer organizer.
Declutter
- Start by clearing a space to put everything from your junk drawer. My junk drawer is in the kitchen so I made sure the counter was clean before starting.
- Empty your junk drawer.
Clean
- Use a vacuum to clean out all the dust and dirt from your junk drawer.
- Next, use a wet cleaning cloth to pick up excess dirt and grime.
- Dry the drawer with a dry cleaning cloth.
Organize
- I highly recommend using a junk drawer organizer or trays to keep your junk drawer organized. You can find many options on Amazon to fit all shapes and sizes of drawers.
- Once you have a junk organizer, place it in your drawer.
- Next, one by one go through your items and see what needs to go back in your junk drawer.
- If an item has another home within your house, go put it away.
- Or if that item would be better stored somewhere else, find a new place for it.
- If the item is something you probably won’t use, get rid of it.
- Also throw away any trash.
(If you choose to not use a junk drawer organizer, place things back into your junk drawer as neatly as possible. Budget friendly hack – You can also use Tupperware dishes to organize your junk drawer.)
Once you have everything back in your junk drawer and it is organized, that’s it! Doesn’t it make you feel like superwoman that your junk drawer isn’t full of junk!! How exciting and motivating, right!
